It should be fun for your child and it could be fun for you too!
This is about more than just lessons. It could be about sharing something with them, something to take away and remember from this time of lockdown. It should be about interaction and fun as well as about learning.
I always prefer for parents of younger children to be present, interacting and involved in lessons as they happen remotely.
Singing along whilst your child plays can be fun, and certainly seeing you in the background is always welcomed.
Starter lessons and sessions for younger children always benefit from parental involvement and I really enjoy involving parents so that they can help their child.
Remember that your child will learn quicker, enjoy the lessons more and benefit form the interaction, if you are there too. They will be proud to share their learning with you and look forward to their time with you.
If you can't always be in the room as we have the lesson, it's always nice to play something for you at the end of the session to show what we have achieved.
I always email lesson notes after the sessions with details of how to practice, what to look out for and how to help a particular aspect of the pupil’s playing to improve. In this way even parents who can't read music and have never played an instrument, can be part of their child's learning and help them to improve in a meaningful and supported manner.
